“And when they had ordained elders in every church and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed.” — ACTS 14:23
Fasting is simply abstaining from food for a certain period of time. The reason we fast is not to use fasting as a way to bribe God to answer our prayers. Instead, fasting helps us to kill unbelief. Whenever you fast, you are not bribing God; you are eliminating unbelief. Fasting is a booster of faith, and faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Rom. 10:17). The enemy of faith is unbelief, and fasting eliminates unbelief so that faith can thrive. Fasting also brings your faith to the surface.
Unbelief is a risk; when Peter turned his face away from Jesus while walking on the sea, he began to sink. Why? He doubted. The moment you allow unbelief to enter your heart, you start taking risks.
Another reason we fast is to prepare ourselves for the next level. It is always better to prepare for an opportunity and not have one than to have an opportunity and not be prepared. For example, it is better to prepare for marriage and not be married than to be in the middle of marriage and be unprepared. You must always prepare for opportunities. Jesus Christ came to earth and prepared Himself. That is why, before He started His earthly ministry, He embarked on a forty-day and forty-night fast. I pray that your fasting will prepare you for your next level.
Prayer: Pray and ask God to give you the grace to fast.
