“And when they had ordained elders in every church and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believe.”
ACTS 14:23
Fasting is simply abstaining from food for a certain period of time. The reason we fast is not to use fasting to bribe God to answer our prayers. Fasting rather helps us to kill unbelief. Whenever you fast, you are not bribing God, instead, you are killing unbelief. Fasting is a booster of faith, and faith comes by hearing the word of God (Rom. 10:17), but the enemy of faith is unbelief and fasting kills unbelief so that faith can have access. Fasting also brings your faith to the surface. Unbelief is a risk; when Peter turned his face from Jesus whiles walking on the sea, he started sinking. Why? He doubted. The moment you allow unbelief to enter your heart, risk takes place.
Another reason we fast is to prepare ourselves for the next level. It is always better to prepare for an opportunity and not have one than to have the opportunity and you are not prepared. For example, it better to prepare for marriage and not being married than to be in the center of the marriage and you are not prepared. You always have to prepare for an opportunity. Jesus Christ came on earth and prepared Himself. That was why before He started His earthly ministry; He embarked on a forty-day and forty-night fast. I pray that your fasting will prepare you for your next level.
